PROPOSED DAIRY STUD BOOK.
. -.'.' PUSHING THE IDEA. At.a meeting of, the Ta'rahaki Executive of the Farmers' Union a .little over (i month ago consideration was" given to' a remit which ran as follows:'—"Tint in conjunction with the testing of dairy stock "for-stud!-purposes,'a herd book bo kept: '. Stock eligible to be placed therein shall bo cows giving' not less than 3001b. 'of butter-fat for the. season;.bulls whoso 1 dam.and grand-dam on the Sire side have produced 3001b. butter-fat for the season. Tho matter was again considered at the recent meeting of the Executive- in Hawe-ra. Mr. E. Maxwell said that,ho understood that through some misunder : standing (reports the "Star") tho question had:not gone any further, but he thought something should be done. .It was an important matter to the dairying people. By the careful rearing of bulls it would mean many thousands of pounds to the dairymen of-tho district. Peoulo paid a great-deal, of attention to the- buying of heifers that were supposed to be . good, but did not give near as much attention to the milking pedigree of the bulls. .. Tho practice ,was to buy anything "that vould get. the "cows in calf. He hoped the. question would: bo kept prominent, and that some action. would be taken.' . He would move: "That the resolution adopted: at last conference in reference to. .tho;. establishment of a,stud.book be forwarded .to'the A.-.and.JP. Associations in.TaraT ; Uaki; with a: request that, they give it 'ooiisidcfatioii." '■ - ';' ' >. .-.' ~',
-Mr.'j; jhon'.&on'.thb'ught the work w;as entirely oneifor. agricultural societies. ■'~ Mr. A.'.'iHiihter regarded, this question as the most important of anything they could consider iii'this part of.the country. He. pointed out iliat there, would be a/ difficulty in working satisfactorily with each separate breed society. There should bo good organisation behind such ;A. movementuspc that .records could bo "kept very-' 'carefully. 1 "Ho instanced tho methods followed in the past of breeding animals for show standards that were no use for.milking'purposes. The breed societies in. other countries had done a lot. of good by working a scheme of the kind pronosed. The resolution was carried.
