CITY SPORTS MEETING.

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. AND HANDICAP, EVENTS. THREE WALKERS DEALT WITH. Nearly three thousand people assembled at tho Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon to viow the Wellington Provincial Championship meeting, organised by the local ccntro of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. Tho day was ouo. of bright sunshine, and tho wind was light.' Entries in all savo one or two events Were good. Scralchings in somo cases were numerous, usually, owing to the fact that competitors had not .obtained tho' requisite spell between one event and another. No records were broken, but many of tho contests of tho day were keenly fought. In the running events tho starter (Mr. T. W. Leslie) had an arduous task. In somo races, particularly in the hundred yards championship. and the 120 yds. hurdles, tho competitors lined up for tho start broke, repeatedly. The starter was patient, bowever, and the final start in every case was good. Results:— CHAMPIONSHiP EVENTS. THE HIGH JUMP. 1 L. MlCay, ■of Wellington, and H. A. Gore, from scratch, ran well for a milo and a quarter, but failed to overhaul his men, aud dropped out. Hall won by a good j margin. Timei 7min. 25 4-ssec. Tlireo Milo Walk Handicap.—M. Tracey (330 yds.), I;'T. E. Johnson (320vds.), 2. Also started: G. Turner, P. Fitzgerald, C. S. Malioney. Mahoney was disqualified for lifting when about half the distance had been covered, but declined to leavo the track, and finished second. Turner, who had the race well in hand, was disqualified in tho seventh lap, and Fitzgerald soon afterwards. There was a; littlo hooting from tile spectators when Turner was disqualified, and tho retiring competitor was clapped. Sir. F. Ross, judge of the event, assigned as a reason for iiis action in ordering Turner to withdraw that be had the wrong style of walking altogether. Turner, according to the judge, put his foot down with the knee bent, and locked the kne'o afterwards. Tracey finished in 23min. 47 l-ssec. 1000 Yards Handicap.—D. .Binnie (25yds.). 1: J. V. A very pleasant wind-up to the Wellington provincial championship meeting was a dinner given by the Wellington Centre, N.Z.A.A.A.. to the' visiting competitors and officials, at the Hotel Windsor on Saturday evening. About 40 people were present and Mr. Marryult, president of tho Council of N.'/,..\.A.A., was elm joiuin.

Tho chairman, in the course of an after-dinner speech, referred to tho meeting held that afternoon, and mentioned tho great promise shown by <o many youug competitors. Mr. M'Yilly, president of the centre, proposed tho toast of the visitors. Mr. Corby, Wanganui, responded, and remarked on the excellent manner in which the sports had been managed. 'Wanganui, he said, was always pleased to welcome visitors from at their meetings, and ho hoped that a strong team would bo sent from here to compete at the Caledonian meeting to be held in "Wanganui on January 23, it being. understood that all (lie running events are amateur ones. Mr. Gilpin, of Masterlon, also responded, and remarked that the result of tho meeting held that afternoon would have a good effect on nmafcufisiji in the country. Naturally, the Maslerton men were* well pleased at winning three or four of the events. Mr. JEL J. Pollock proposed the toast of the successful competitors, and expressed the hope that .tjio country members would instil into their friends the Spirit of amateurism, and thus "keep tho fldg flying.'" . Messrs. M'Kenzie (Masterton) and Williams (Wanganui) also- responded. - The other toasts proposed were the "Wellington Centre,"• proposed by Mr. Marryatt, and responded to by • Mr. M'Villy and Mr. Dawson; "the Chairman,''..proposed by .Mr. M'Villy, who referred'to the services given' to amateur sport by. Mr. Marryatt... A feature of" the evening was'tho presentation, of "the'prizes to Mr. Dunn on behalf of tho winning competitors;'won by tho Wellington men at the recent meeting, held -in Ma.sterton. A. surprise' was sprung on Mr. W. L. Dunn, the -Aiasterton Club's delegate on tho ..Wellington ..Centre, ..and lion, secretary. of that body, when tho chairman, on helialf of tho Masterton Club, nsked him to accept a sovereign case as a small token of esteem in which ho is held by their club.
