THORNDON CLUB'S CARNIVAL SOME GOOD RACING. Tho 'Ihcrndon Amateur Swimming Club's annual carnival was held at the 'Thorridon.'Baths "on "Saturday alternoon. ' • Though the weather was splendid, the attendance was not quite as good as usual, the fact that the carnival clashed with sports on the Basin Reserve being 110 doubt accountable for, the falling off. • In every other way tho :£ariival was an undoubted, success. ...The-raciiig, on beautifully - smooth, water, resulted, in several very close: finishes, and the club handieapper, Mr: If! The principal event of the day was tho . 300 yanls handicap, in which R. Healy, B. C. Freyberg, and C. Stranger were among the competitors. As there : were ten' .starters for this race, Healy ■ and Freyberg both expressed the opinion that at.should be'decided in ,heats'on account flf the small tyrnuigCspico'. at the east end.- The event -way; 'however, got °ff in one heat, and' the result was some • collisions among the competitors. Freyberg and Stranger "both showed, up well, but the former, though he finished second, did - liot appear to have tne winner,. A. M'Lean, fully extended. Stranger was level with Freyberg at the • - end of 250 yards, but then dropped back , and finished fifth. • . .-• Both the 50 yards handicap and the 100 yards handicap were good races. In the filial of tho latter event C. Brice, lsec., ' finished fourth, just behind tho placed • j men, and he put up a fine time perform- '■ ance, several watches making him cover . tho distance in 63 seconds.
