WAIHOANGA.

A well-attended and representative meeting was. held in Holtoni Hall last week the object of the. promoters being, to form a local tennis club. l Mr. Olphe'rt was voted, to the chair', and stated that there was a. want of amusement, especi-. ally for ladies of the district, as, compared with their more, fortunate sisters in other centres.. It' was' then proposed by' Mr." Forgusson and seconded; by Mr. Glacken and carried that a tennis club bo formed, this court to be for player's' from the districts of Te Iloro, Hauher?, and Waihoanga.- Mr.: B.eauchamp proposed and Mr. Holtom seconded that the namo of tho new club should be "The Maranikau Tennis Club." The motion was carried,. Office-bearers were elected as follow:—Captain, Mrs. Ferg'usson; secretary, Mr. W. Olphert; management committee, Messrs. l'ergussori, G. Glacken, and Mrs. Holtom. Sir, Horribau has kindly given tho club a beautiful spot on his property to lay down their court, and members had lost no time in preparing tho ground for play. The club hai? beeii rather fortunate in securing' tho services of Mrs. Fergusson, as captain as this lady was formerly a champion: player ill Otago. Members hope to open their court in . ITorribau Park for play iieit Saturday, January 21. • " . The engine for tho new mill on the Tongata Laud Company's estate is now on tiie ground and the' resident director, Mr. J. Grey, hopes to have it at work in about a fortnight, now that the suspension bridgo leading into tlie property is finished. The new school will soon bo out of'the hands of the .contractor. Lamb shearing is in full swing and, if tho present fiuc weather lasts' until after shearing time, there will be rather a warm time here with bush fires on. all sides. A cricket club is being formed hero and it is intended to try conclusions with tho Paraparaumu Cluu at an early date.
