PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Palrr.erston North, June 30.

A large audience assembled at tha Opera House last eveniug, when thfl Orchestral Society gave tho first coilcert of the present season. The programme right through was a capital one, and was well rendered. The vocalists of the evening were Miss Irene O'Brien, of Palmerston, and Mr. F. Baines, of Masterton, and their'numbers wero so much appreciated that they had to respond to encores in each case.

The local Ledge of Druids held their fortnightly "social" and dance last night, when there were between 60 and 70 couples present, and a most enjoyable time was spent.

At tho Polico Court to-day, a young mail named George M'Donald, alias Len King, who had been arrested on tho previous night by Acting-Detective Sv/canay, was brought up on several charges of false pretences, to which he pleaded guilty. It appeared from the evidence that M'Donald had represented himself as being a iockey named King, and, on the strength" of an alleged offer , of three rides at Gisborne from a trainer named Davis, had borrowed .£3 from a Palmerston resident. He had also attempted to take down another resident in a similar manner. M'Donald, it was • stated, has a number of previous convictions against him, and has only just come out of the gaol. He received a sentence of four months' imprisonment.
