TRAMWAY EXTENSION.

MOUNT VICTORIA SLOPE. The question of constructing an extension of the tramway up Alajoribanks Street to A.ustin Street and the top of Hawker Street was before the City Council last evening.

Tho Tramways Committee reported that if the council was not in a position to carry out the work the residents would be prepared (according to the recent deputation) to form a syndicate and construct the line themselves, buying the necessary power from the corporation. The committee had informed the deputation that the council would not entertain the proposal of a private company runniug any portion of the city tramways, this being directly opposed to the council's fixed policy with Tespect to public services. The committee suggested that the deputation should consult residents of R-cseneath and Haitaitai, and ascertain whether the ratepayers of the whole district concerned would be prepared to rate themselves specially for the proposed extension, and then bring down definite proposals. The matter would then be considered.

The council decided to follow out the suggestions of the Travmays Committee.
