PROVINCIAL CENTRES.

(From Our Special CorrcaDonilenti.)

: MASTERTON. , ;Mr. A. W. Hogg, M.P., whoso health was for some time anything but satisfactory, and who made a trip south to recuperate, is now ■ thoroughly recovered. Members representing the Wairarapa ward of tho Education Board will wait upon tho Trust Lands Trustees.at their monthly meeting on- Friday evening to , discuss the question of tho erection of a building oil a site provided by tho Trust. The attention of Wairarapa dairy farmers is being directcd-to tho Jlolstriu breed of cattle for utilitarian purposes. Wonder has been expressed that this breed lias not been tried in > the AVairu-' rapti -before. ' It may interest those concerned to know that many years ago Mr. Colenian Phillips, of Dry-Kiver Station, imported Holstcins. At that lime ho was subjected to ridicule, and ho could not induce farmers-to follow his example. -His homo in .Carterton is known to this day as "Holstein Lodge." : A- very, useful institution 'has recently been established. in Masterton in the shape of a Parliamentary Union, and much enthusiasm is being displayed by its'members, who number already nearly one hundred. Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby, of Carterton, was on Monday night unani--mously elected Speaker, and in acknowledging the compliment pointed out that the Hon. W. Pember Reeves, Sir Westby' Porcivnl; Mr. C. Lewisj Mr. T. E. Taylor, Mi'. Laurenson, and other politicians had-graduated in a similar, union in Christchurch. Mr..G. E. Sykes, who promises we'll'as a debater, has been'elected the first Premier of tho union, and he has with him a strong Cabinet. Mr. J. C. Cooper is Chairman of Committees, and Mr. AV. Gillespio is right at home as Clerk of the House. At the meeting on Monday evening Mr. Hornsby delivered a panegyric on the late King, which was much appreciated, and,( on tho motion of the Premier; a resolution was carried in silence, placing upon record the appreciation of the union of the services rendered the Empiro by "Edward the Peacemaker," and the loss sustained by the nation in his death. Dr. W. H. Hosking, of this town, who is an ardent electro-therapeutist, and who claims some remarkable cures from the utilisation of electricity, is now devoting a good deal of attention to the radium cure. He has experienced some difficulty, however, in procuring a supplyof radium. He sent an order . Homo nearly twelvo months ago, accompanied by a draft tor ,£SOO, and it is only now that the radium has come to hand in. a small registered package. ' . ' There has been , quite a revival ■ of interest in Church.matters in Masterton of late. Tho visit of the htd Mi. AVpollcombo resulted. in. the formation . ot a stron" branch of the Church of England Young Men's Society. Tho subsequent mis-sion-of Dr. Henry and Mr. Scott created something akin to a revival in religious "Tho 1 health of Mr. Joseph Payton," the veteran journalist of Masterton, has latterly occasioned a good deal of' anxiety to his many friends. 'Mr. Payton. has tor come time past been able to attend busi-. ness for only an hour or two every (lay. Mr. C. E. Daniell, the ■well-known builder of this town, and a member of the AVellington .Harbour Board,. has not been in the best of health of late. It is wider-, stood that he has been medically advised to try the "rest cure." • -- Evidences are • not ■ wanting that the period of depression which has', passed over this community, in common with others in the..southern ,portion_ of the North Island, is passing away.. Very low of the better classes of houses m thetown are untenanted, and there is ■ an air ot confidence among business men which nas been lacking for some'time. " . Mr' John Hessey, of this town, whoso name is intimhtoly known in connection with tho dredging.industry.ot, the Dominion, has recently returned from a visit to tho AVost-Coast of :tlio South Island. Ho has secured a claim of about one hundred acres two or three miles, from JloKitika, and the prospectus of a company to be known.-as the "Success-,is about, to be issired. .'Already more than halt _ptthe shares which will be available ior local-disposition .have been applied for. - Mr. Nolson Bunting, who has been for some;years a popular.member of,tho stair

of the Masterton District High School, is resigning his position to take up the secretaryship of tho Wairarapa Hospital Board. Mr. Bunting is well fitted for the position.
