Some time ago the discovery was made that one silver and two gold antique watches, valued at .£3OO, had been stolen from one of the glass cases in Auckland Art Gallery. The articles were part of the. Ma'ckelvie collection. The matter was kept very quiet, th» police being of opinion that it would bo. easier to bring the thief to book if. no publicity were given. Detective Cos has now succeeded, in recovering one of the goldwatohes and the silver watch, and to-day he arrested Henry Vincent Bruning, alias Harry Renaud, a fitter at Karangahako, in connexion with the theft. ' THE ROYAL HOLIDAYS. Duncdin, May 10. At a meeting of retailers to-day was. agreed that, .in..future,. the. King's Birthday (June 3) be observed as ■a holiday, and that, as May 20 (King Edward's funeral) is to be observed as a holiday, .the usual holiday on Empire Day (Muy 2-i) be not observed this year. November 9 will now drop l out of the list of holidays. TRAM BRAKES COMMISSION. (By Teleiraph—Press Association.) /. Christchurch, May 10. The Tramway . BrakovComoiission held a brief sitting here this morning. Mr. T. G. Russell, representing tho Christchurch Tramways Board, called evidence to show that there had never been any complaint as to tho efficiency of tho air brake in • use in Christchurch. Incidentally, Mr. A. Eosscr, secretary of the Auckland Tramway Employees' Union, gave evidonce corroborating the statement of ono witness as to tho celerity with which a car had been stopped to avoid a collision. Mr. Scott Symington, the board's engineer, recommended tho air brake and track brake in combination as tho best for Auckland conditions. The oommission will sit at Dunediri on Monday. NEW MAGISTRATE. New Plymouth, May 10. Mr. I-. G. Reid, tho newly-appointed magistrate, who is to do relieving work here before taking charge of the Wairavapa district, was welcomed by the local Bar to-day. PILOTAGE AT AUCKLAND.., Auckland, May 10. The Auckland Harbour Board has deferred, for three mouths, the question of enforcing compulsory pilotage. GUNNER RUN OVER. Christchurch, May 10. When the guns were being taken to Hagley Park this morning for tho purpose of firing a Royal salute, one of tho gunners slipped and fell, and ii. Wheel of one of the limbers passed over his right leg. The injuries were not serious, and were attended by members of the Ambulance Brigade.
