AN EXOOUS OF TEACHERS FflOM OBANGIA. By Telegraph-Press Bloerafootein, April 27. Owing to the BUI (introduced by the Minister, for Education, General Hertzog) providing for the extension of the bilingual principle among school teachers, British teachers in Orange Biver Colony, who formerly numbered hundreds, now total eighty. Of this number fifty are seeking situations in Bhodesia. THE MINISTER ON DUPLICATION OF SCHOOLS. General Hertzog, the Minister for Education in the Orange Eiver Colony, in replying to a deputation from the Education Conference recently, said that it had never been his intention to get ricj, of the services of any teacher because ho could not comply with the provisions of the iaw, which required a knowledge of iu- x. Moreover, he did not think it could be claimed that such a I ? to ? w as contemplated by the School Act; in fact, he thought the Act contemplated the reverse. In tho course of his reply to a resold tion of the conference, asking that a parent should have the right to choose the medium of instruction, General Hertzog contended that the principle . kid j "Vlt* 110 Act was sound. He could not aomit the soundness of the contention that parents should be allowed to choose the medium. He contended that if the resolution of the conference were agreed! to, it would mean the entire duplication pt all larger schools, both with regard to bmldings and staff, a proposition which no Government, or Parliament could be asked to entertain, apart from the incalculable harm which must result to the future .citizens of the country, and to the country itself in keeping'apart Dutch and English-speaking children durin« their school years. He could not adopt the recommendation.
