PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

i (From Our Special OorresDondenU : Palmerston March 22. Mr. Eobert Gardner, a • member of the council of the Chamber of Commerce, has been agitating for some time to have the name of Palmerston North, changed. Mr. Gardner has no objection to the name "Palmerston," but when it has the word "North" tacked, he thinks that it detracts from tho dignity of an important town, and handicaps it, giving, as he maintains, a rather rural impression. Mr. Gardner proposes to bring the matter forward again at the next meeting of the chamber. He has not suggested any name, but thinks that this might be settled by a committee of citizens.

The Kia Toa Football Club held its annual meeting last evening, about forty members being present, and Mr. J. Stalker occupied the 'chair. The'report and balance-sheet were read .and confirmed. The following officers were elected i—Patron, Mr. E. 0. Hurley j' president,- Mr. J. M'Kewen; vice-presi-dente, Mrs. Adams, Messrs. Fred. Mowlem, T. Childs, N. H. Nash, A. H. Rogers, G. E. Trevor, H. Wollerman, W. S. Dickson; delegate to the Rugby Union, Mr. K. Armstrong; captain, Mr. J. Govan, secretary and, treasurer, Mr. J. Hardie; auditor, Mr. C. W. Seeker; general committee, Messrs. J. M'Kewen, jun., Coldstreara, Thorburn, Skinner, and officers ex officio: vice-president Rugby Union, Mr. E. .0. Hurley. The season will be opened with a practice match on Anril 2.

A fine addition to the business premises of the town is to be made in Rangitikei Street, Messrs. Mason, StrutheTS and Co. baring let a contract to Messrs. Sollitt Bros. for. the erection of handsome new premises in the street named. Mr. C. Tilleard Natusch is supervising architect.

The ordinary meeting of the Friendly Societies' Council wmb held last night, Bro. F. H. M'Lean. being in the chair. Arrangements wore made in connection with tho animal euchre tournament, and it was decided to commence this on May 5. It was also decided that any lodge drawing a "bye should entertain the other teams. A number of recommendations were made for tho incoming oouncil.
