THE MAYORALTY.
The Hon. T. W. Hislop did not give a definite answer to tho deputation which last evoning asked him to again contest tho city Mayoralty, but it is generally thought that he will not again come forward. His private business affairs are of such a nature as to make his public actions dopendent to somo extent upon tho wishes 1 of his partners, and ho has found it desirable to consult them before again offering his services to tho 'city. Wo aro inclined to the opinion that Mr. Hislop will not contest the Mayoralty on the present occasion, and tho result will probably bo that a number of candidates will offer themselves. Some days ago Dr, Newman, who has already served the city in various capacities, announced his intention to contest tho office against allcomers, and there are already signs that ho will meet with-wido support. Me. Barber, an ex-Oity Councillor, is also spoken of as a candidate; and Mr. Bolton and Mr. J. P. Luke aro considered as "probables." 'Of this quartette, Dr. Newman should certainly command most support. Tho coming year in the municipal life of tho city will not bo an easy ono for Mayor and Councillors, and signs are not wanting that there will bo need for excrcisc of special care and sound judgmont .in tho administration of its - affairs. The temper .of citizens may be gauged by the recent rejection of loan proposals put .forward by tho Council, and unless we are much mistaken they will rccognise tho necessity for choosing a "safe" man rather, than one filled with great schemes for the. advancement of the city.
