It is reported that the steamer Mashona, one of the Bucknall fleet, has been fixed to load at New York under the auspices of the A. and A. Line, and would be dispatched for Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand ports on December 16. THE MANUKAU. Yesterday the small coastal trading steamer Manuka u arrived in port from Lyttelton, where she has recently undergone survey ana annual overhaul, and had her compasses ad-, justed. She is under the command of Captain Burg, who was formerly in command of the Joseph Sims. Her tonnage is 45 net and 65 gross. The Manukau, which conies to Messrs. Johnston and Co.'s agency, is engaged in the Waitara-Mokau trade, and leaves Wellington for those ports to-day. WRECKAGE FOUND AT OTAKI. Mr. J. S. Poynter, of Otaki, lias writton to the Collector of Customs at Wellington informing him that about six weeks ago he found some wreckage on the Otaki beach, but placed no importance ou the find. Thinking it may be part of the Union Company's missing Loch Lomond, Mr. Poynter has sent a full description. It is generally supposed that (he wreckage, which-is part of a hatch covering, has broken'adrift from the foreign sailing vessel that was wreoked'at Alaua Island some years ago. '

MAMARI ARRIVES HOME. Several smart passages have been accomplished by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's liner Mamari. The latest one is between Wellington and London. She left Wellington on September 10, and arrived in London on Tuesday morning, occupying 40 days on the run Home. THE GOVERNMENT STEAMERS. • As the Tutanekai is required immediately for cable work, she leaves for Wanganui today. The departure of tha Hinemoa for the North is accordingly postponed, as she will leave for the Brothers and Cape Palliser Lighthouses to-day in place of the Tutanekai. Next Sunday the Union .Company's steamer Rotoiti,. instead of going to "Nelson .direct, will make a call at Picton-en. route. ■ Yesterday ' the Union Company's . training ship Dartford went on the Patent Slip, .where she will probably remain a day or two. - About the middle of next week the -Union Company's steamer Kaituna will be recommissioned, and leaves this port for .Westport to, load coal for the Admiralty at Sydney, and Melbourne. .Messrs. Johnston and Co. advise that on her arrival at Blenheim to-day the s.s. • Blenheim will proceed thence on a special trip to Fox-' ton. She leaves the latter port on Friday afternoon for Wellington. , Cabled advice received in Sydney-on October 13 reports that the now steamer Malwa, now being constructed to the order of the P. and 0. Line, has been launched on the Clyde. The Malwa is the second vessel of the M. class the company are building for their Australian trade, and it is understood that when completed she will be one of the most palatial liner's alloat. A cable has been received in Sydney stating that good progress is being made with the steamers which are being built for the Orient Line, arid the first will be launched in November. Some will be ready to begin tho • service on the expiry of the Royal Mail contract in May. The first of the new steamers is to be called the Otway. The Orient Company intends to adhere to the policy,. adopted for a good many. years past, in giving steamers names beginning with "0." In a table published by the "Register of Australian and New Zealand Shipping," showing the number and tonnage of steamers and sailing vessels registered at each Australasian port on June 30, 1908, Now Zealand heads tho list with 639 vessels, of 143,558 .-tons. Then follow Victoria with 376 vessels of 137,243 tons, New South Wales coming third with 1087 vessels of 128,709 tons, South Australia, Queensland, West Australia, and Tasmania following in order, with 59,853 tons, 21,835 tons, 21,001 tons, and 17,308 tons. The gross tonnage totals in all 532,562 tons, split up between 3388 vessels.
