THE MEIKLE DEFENCE COMMITTEE'S GRATITUDE.

Sir,—The above committee, throu"h the medium'of the press, desires to hereby convey.its m'ost h&aHy thanks to every member of Parliament from tile Prime Minister do-yu who fought for jufitico to bo done to John James Meiklc, especially for their vote in' favour of the, sum. set down by the Government, namely, £5000, to be paid to him Thoy-.trust Mr. Meikle's present temporary defeat will act as a, powerful incentive to every, fair-minded, person throughout the Dominion,, appealing to tho .best an noblest in them to. demand as, a pledge from their wouldbe representatives at the coming election that the said John James Meiklo shall receive at least the'said Bum .of £6000,' or that' a fresh

trial of both his case and Lambert's case bo given before a tribunal of at least threo Judges of the Supreme Court and a jury, so as to bring to a satisfactory end a case which is a standing disgrace to the Dominion. We further wish to say that we can only excuse Meikle's enemies on tho ground of ignorance of tho real merits of his case or personal spite, and .we, are prepared .'.to'meet them at any time.in.public or private council and discuss his" case on . the relative facts on which it rests, which, if they do, wo are satisfied that '.they will "change their yiows.— I, aui etc., ' '
