MISSIONARY DAY. [HI TKLEGB4PH.— SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) Nelson, October 20. To-day was tlio foreign missionary day at the Baptist Conference. The secretary's report stated that in spite of the great un-< rest in India, work hadlbbeii prosecuted with great faithfulness and • considerable success. Medical missionary work in the hospital at Chandpore, uudor Dr. North, had been responsible for much good in ministering to the physical needs of the people. No fewer than 13,933 visits had been paid to the dispensary patients coming from over nine hundred different villages. Dr. North's fame as a sight-giver was spread all over the district, during the year some 24 successful operations having boen performed. At Brahmanbaria, under Miss Beckingsale, 3272 visits had been paijl.by natives.from 83 villages. The Rev.;' John, Takle •. had rendered conspicuous service, in missionary literaturo work in North Tipperah. The treasurer's report, presented by Mr. A. Hoby (Wellington), shows the total receipts for the year to have been £2060. Tlio year began with a debit of £94, and ended with a. credit of £132. Li the oourse of debate. it was pointed out that the contributions represented an average contribution of Ss. 7d. per member of the churches, an average which compared most favourably with any country. The discussion on the reports was most animated. Reference was made to the unrest in India., and to the large amount of ignorance prevailing in New Zealand regarding it. It was averred that India was awakening from mental inertia, and though many things in relation to that awakening were regrottable, wisely directed it boded great good for India. During the course of the proceedings the president read a lettor from a member of tlio conference giving a memorial donation of £500 for tho missionary funds.
