THE NIWARU AT AUCKLAND. Last Wednesday afternoon the Tyser liner Niwaru, from London, via Australia, arrived' in Auckland. Departure from London was taken on August 13, and exceptionally fine weather prevailed through the north-east trades and across the equator, until, reaching the south-east trades limit, where the usual head seas and high southerly swell consider ably impeded the vessel's progress. When in lat. 15deg. south and long. 2deg. east, a steamer was sighted ahead, which, after a long chase was overhauled, and proved to be the White Star liner Cufic, bound for Adelaide direct. The Caps of Good Hope was rounded on' September 4, at midnight, and a course was then set for the Crozet group, the Niwaru passing close to the desolated Penguin Island on September 10. The usual southern latitude weather prevailed till the vessel was near the isolated island of Kerguelen, where strong S.W. gales, accompanied by violent show and sleet squalls and - tremendous seas were encountered, necessitating the vessel's course being altered on account of - the heavy seas frequently sweeping the decks fore and' aft. Fortunately no damage was done. Strong north-westerly winds and thick misty weather' prevailed after passing the island, with occasional gales and heavy seas. Melbourne was reached on September 25, after a voyage of 41 days G hours 21 minutes.' After discharging powder and cargo, the Niwaru proceeded to Sydney, which port was entered on October 5. Having unloaded. further cargo at Sydney, the steamer left that centre for Auckland on October 10, and arrived as above. On the voyage from Sydney to Auckland, moderate south winds.were met with. Captain Hollis has with him the following officers:—Mr. Compton, chief; Mr. Sherrington, second; Mr. Robinson, third;, llr. Cowlishaw, fourth; Mr. Cheney, chief engineer; Mr. Chent, second engineer; Mr. Hansen, chief refrigerating engineer.

Smith, late ' third officer of the Maitai, has gone to Melbourne for orders. Captain Douglas has again taken command of the barque Bankfields at Greymouth, relieving Captain Mahon, who was temporarily in charge of the vessel. Captain Mahon 'took command of the steamer, Ripple, relieving Captain J. E. Allsopp, who is remaining ashore for one trip. According to' -thn "Lyttelton Times" the Shaw-Savill liner Aotea, after being in port for six weeks, went out into the stream on Wednesday last. In common with other Home vessels.at other ports, the Aotea is experiencing the effects of dull times, but Home shipping is expected to revive in a few weeks. Favoured' by southerly winds, the - smart little brigantine Aratajiu made a fast passage up the coast to 'Kaipara, says the Christchurch "Press." The stretch of SSG miles' was covered by the vessel in 76 hours. She left Lyttelton at 8 a.m. last Monday, and. crossed in over the liaipara bar at noon oil Thursday.

■ On Friday the Rippingham Grange was expected to proceed from Dunedin to Port -Chalmers, to go on the lap-up berth for a couple of jveeks, after which sho will commence her Homeward loading.; Her future movements are" not-yet decided upon, beyond the fact that the vessel sails from Wellington finally on November 25, for West of England ports. The Hnddart-Parker steamer Westralia, wliick has taken up the running of the Wimnve'ra, while the latter'boat is laid up for overhaul -and survey, left Sydney, on. Wednesday for Auckland; where she is due on Sunday, after calling at' Gisbo'rne and Napier. The Westralia arrives here on Friday, October 23, and leaves the same day for Lyttelton'and Dunedin. „

The Norwegian barque Glimt, which left Lyttelton on August 18, in ballast, for Bunbury, West Australia, arrived at her destination on Wednesday, after a passage of 57 days. It was the master's intention, when he left 'Lyttelton, to make the passage to Banbury round the north of the Australian Continent, via Torres Straits. The Glimt. is to load another cargo of jarrali for a New Zealand port, probably Lyttelton.

A southern exchange reports that when the Waikare arrives at Sydney this trip Captain M'Bcth will transfer to the Union Company's recently-purchased steamer Paloona, and Captain Stott, who took the Wanaka over, will take command of the Waikare. The Paloona is to be docked before resuming her_ running in the Sydney-Hobart trade. Captain J. V. Bentley will leave the Paloona on arrival and await instructions at Sydney. According to the Dunedin "Star" the barque Ariel,- now in .dock at Port Chalmers had a heavy coating of marine growth removed from her bottom. The profusion of shells and other material has had • two years to accumulate, that'being the space of time since she was last docked, which happened to be in Norway. The bottom plates are receiving'a good coating of paint prior to the tallow being applied. The. vessel will, probably leave for Maiden Island about the middle of this week.
