LIBERAL AND LABOUR FEDERATION.

ADDRESS BY IIR. M'LEAN. The monthly meeting of the Liberal, and Labour Federation, - representing all five branches of tho city, was held last night. 51r. J. Coogan presided'over a good attendance of members. '~ It was resolved to hold a social gathering" 011 September 29, • when advantage will be taken of the occasion to make a presentation'to the Hon. W. Hall-Jones. : "Tho resignation, of Mr. George Windor "from ;thdv presidency. and .membership of the league was accepted. In this connection' there was some discussion as to whether a donation of £5, forwarded with the resignation, should bo accepted, some members thinking" it was an attempt to smooth things I oyer. It was pointed out, however, that tho donation had been promised to the social fund :bcfo'ro the resignation was-even thought of. llr.' Jl'Lean, Liberal candidate for Wellington' East, tlicll gave a short address. In i referring to his defeat at tho last general election, lie said that if his name had been anything but M'Lean ho would probably noiv be tho sitting member. As it was, ho believed many people voted for Mr. M'Laren, thinking that they were voting for him. On this account ho thought he should be given another chance. Then, too, when Mr. Winder was elected president of the league, ho 1 also was proposed, but refused to accept nomination since ho intended to stand for Parliament, and in place of this Jlr. Winder accepted tho position, saying he had no axo to grind, no other purpose to serve. As the Second Dallot Bill appeared to be likeiy to become law, lie hoped that the election would be a good and fair one. In regard to the present Administration, ho thought ih<yt the Government bad boon doing tho best possible for New Zealand for tho past ]9 years. Its social legislation had brought the..eyes'of the whole world on New Zealand. He had supported the Liberals when they wcro not in such high favour as now.' and he thought that they had all along done tho-best i'or tho people.
