ONSLOW BOROUGH COUNCIL.
THE PROPOSED FIRE BRIGADE. Tho Onslow Borough Council held a special meeting last night.' . Present :—Tho Mayor A (Mr. J. G. Harkness), and Councillors Lynneberg, Kiernan,; Fitzgerald, Watson, Plimmer, and Aplin. ■ 1 y- < , The Mayor again brought up the offer'of Mr. J. W. Carrick, of Kaiwarra, to form a volunteer fire-brigade, .on condition .:thafc, the Council would assist by granting appliances; Ho found that the Fire Brigades Act did:not -• prevent the establishment of . such a.body, • without creating a fire board. " Councillor Fitzgerald spoke strongly in favour of the proposal. "Those who wished "to form the brigade would prefer to be under the control of the Council , rather than any other body. Ho, moved:-r"That a...-public meeting be called; to consider the.formation of a fii;e brigade at; Kaiwarra." ! . said those !interested should form .the'brigade,' and .then ask ■ tire Council to take it over. -) Tho time, had come for a firo brigade,' but if should be a borough affair, not confined to Kaiwarra. :-' ' , Councillor' Plimmer. supported, the resolution.' Tho brigade would, be quite ready to go .to other parts of. the borough. ; . .. . Councillor Aplin. favoured the idea .of - a borough fire brigade. ' ■ Councillor Lynneberg urged that .the first step for the Council to take should bo to go into the question of plant, and decide what was required, what expense could.be afforded, and whore the station should bo located,- with the necessary shed and meeting room.-' He was quite in-s.ympathv with' the movement;' .' Councillor Fitzgerald said-that the hose; al-. ready owned by three firms at Kaiwarra would be enough for a .brigade to start with, and would be all the better for being, taken out for practice sometimes. . There .would-be no great expense entailed in equipping. the brigade. He thought the owners.of. tlip'hose should be willing to hand it over to the brigade. -: y v, ■ ; Councillor Lynneberg said that .it would be impossible to test the hose,-as the Wellington City Council would not pormit the water to bo used, except! in case of fire. / Councillor Watson said ,he thought ; tha residents of Kaiwarra .should ; organise'- the brigade, and then approach tho Counoil. . Tho.-motion was lost, and it was resolved on the motion of the Mayor to write to Mr. J. W. Carrick, who had. first approached the Council-in the. matter,' informing-him-that the Council appreciated the movement, but could not say what financial aid, oould: bo given, until the estimates for the.current-yeai were under consideration. . . •-•. OTHER BUSINESS: • In bonnectiori with the loan' for' theKaiwarra drainago scheme, which has been approved by the Health Department, it : was resolved to inform tho Treasury that' the Council wished to borrow £1464,'f0r 32 years, at 4 per cent. /' .
