Cromwell Borough Council

The usual monthly meeting <>f the above was held on Thursday evening last. Owing to there SPrng no meeting for two months this was of an unusually tengfpy nature. Present; Cr. Brown Deputy-Mayor (in the chair), Crs. J. Hosking, L. M. Jolly, Wm. Partridge, N. C. Yeoman, C. Harvey, and F. W. Partridge. Tho Mayor (Mr C. W. J. Roberts), who was unavoidably detained arrived shortly after the commencement of the meeting. Outward correspondence as read was approved and inward correspondence dealt with as follows; The Health Department's report showing a satisfactory state of affairs for the month of June, was received. The Health Department forwarded the bacteriological and chemical report on the examination of the town water supply and this showed excellent results.—Received, one or two councillors viewing it with evident scepticism.

Messrs J. Fulcher and G. 0. Walker applied for the lease of Section I and 11, Block 37, for camping sites.—Granted at a special charge. Tho Main Highways Board forwarded a circular on road safety.—Received.

The Cromwell Brass Band applied for tho usual subsidy.—Granted.

The Vincent Hospital Board wrote re the proposed loan for building a new hospital at Cromwell and gave particulars of the method of repayment.—Received.

The engineer, Public Works Department, Cromwell applied to have his office connected with the water main.—The application was granted the town clerk to attend to same.

Mr S. Macale wrote requesting the temporary cancellation of his special water supply.—Granted.

Messrs Brodrick and Parcell wrote re valuation of borough land leased by Mr M. Ritchie. The lease for 21 years of Lot D, Secton I, Block 27, to be offered for public auction in accordance with the provisions of the Municipal Corporation Act. It was resolved that a letter in connection with the Aerodrome be handed to the President of the Aero Club.

Mr Fletcher Roberts, Dunedin, forwarded a lengthily report on the proposed new Reservoir and the Sewerage scheme. A plan of the latter was also forwarded.—lt was decided to write the authorities inquiring what subsidy woidd be available in the event of the council undertaking these works.

The Cromwell Fire Brigade wrote supporting the proposal for a new Reservoir.—Received. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote requesting that the Council suitably celebrate Arbor Day by the planting and further protection ofc ;rees.—Received. '

The Mayor referred to the loss sustained by Cr. W. Partridge by the death of his sister, Mrs Scott and also to the death of a worthy citizen, Mr Thos. Johnston, and a motion of condolence to the relatives was passed in the usual manner.

A deputation consisting of Messrs Holm. MacDonald, J. Webb, and C. W. Stumbles, waited on the council on behalf of the golf club with a request lor assistance in connection with obtaining new links adjoining CromwellV. Mr MacDonald outlined the position with respect to the doubtful tenure of the present links and supplied details as to the purchase of the proposed new links. After some discussion the council considered this was not a mutter that could be finalised in a hurry. Mr F. Gibson, the borough dayman, waited on the council with a request for assistance in connection with part of his duueHe pointed out that, with the giowth of the town his duties liad increased considerably.—Asjistance to Ik- granted.

Tlic Mayor reported on his a isit to the annual meeting of the Otago Expansion League and explained howhe had advanced the claims of ' Upper Clutha district. Cr. Partridge (Water Coinmitt. repot t/_'d that numerous tappings h been put in and steps would have to be taken to keep the service jp, as well as pressure for the fire brigade. A relief valve had burst through frosts. JNew washers ;>uii en fire plug at the fire station. The uirotaker required some tools in connection with the cleaning out of the iace which was to take place shortly. It was hoped to make a special job of the water race this year and bring in all the available water—Received.

Jn reply tp Cr. W. Partridge, the Mayor stated that there had been an Inch tapping put ill for the PublicWorks Camps at the Recreation ground. Cr. F. W. Partridge said he knew nothing whatever of the taping and it was news to him. Councillors expressed surprise that this had been done without the permission.—The clerk was instructed to write to the Public Works Department inquiring into the matter.

Cr. JoJJy in' the absence of Cr. Harvey, reported on behalf of the Works Committee that 208 yards of gravel were put on and filling in done in Ortivp street, and several bad corners attended to . A sj)aft had been put down in Mr Jno. Stephens property to assist Mr Fletcher Roberts in his survey. There was still a little work to he clone in Ortlve street. Tilt* truck could do with an overhaul a* nothing had been done since it was purchased two years ago.—Received. After some discussion on the condition of the truck several councillors thought a new truck would be more economical whilst Cr. \V. Partridge thought another horse would be a better investment. Hp also, suggested that Horace street and Ray street be improved otife, to Achill street. The clerk intimated that work was now being- carried out on these strepis. It was decided to put in a temporary fuaju a| uru] of Ortive Street.

Cr. Hpsking (Forestry Committee), reported that the Recreation ground had been cleaned up. The fences had been tightened up and a small gate put in at the corner. A fence had been shifted and put round some young trees. Negotiations had been entered into with Cr. W. Partridge for the grazing qf the Recreation ground and these were satisfactory to the committee. Cr. Sanders had

applied for temporary grazing but this had been refused as the young trees were not fenced off. Mr Partridge's preposition. he con-

tended, was the most beneficiaJ one | for the council and the committee had gouo to a lot of trouble to arrange satisfactory terms.. Cr. Brown thought that outsiders should be given an opportunity and that applications should be in writing. Cr. W. Partridge agreed with this. Cr. Hoskiug said they had' already gone to considerable trouble in arranging this matter and they had received a very suitable offer. Cr Yeoman supported Cr Hosking and thought they had made a very wise choice. After Cr Partridge's explanation of how he intended to use the ground most of the councillors agreed to the proposition but Cr Brown objected and. considered the matter should be made public and after a somewhat lengthy discussion it was decided to advertise the grazing of the ground.

The chairman of works and clerk were instructed to interview the dayman with respect to the condition ol the truck.

Cr W. Partridge brought up tlie subject of the alterations of the Electoral boundaries and said he thought that Cromwell should be the returning office and moved a motion to that effect. This was carried unanimously.

Cr Brown brought up the matter of a defective drain which required urgent attention.—To be attended to. The Mayor mentioned the matter oi the local broadcasting station, 4ZC. which was likely to bo closed by the Government and felt that owing to the great service rendered by this station the Government should be requested to extend a subsidy and he moved in that direction. This was supported unanimously, the necessary motion to be forwarded to the proper quarter.

Accounts amounting to £220 were passed for payment. The bank book showed a credit, balance of £479 8s ad. The meeting closed with the usual vote to the chair at 12.45 a.m.
