Importance of Secondary Industries

Best Support Needed (By G. VV. Clinkard, Secretary foi | Industries and Commerce). I Our manufacturing industries already play a very important part in the economic life of the dominion, and as time goes on they will become oi continuously increasing importance During the year ended March 31, 1930 they absorbed 54,801 persons in employment, -while the number absorbed in what is termed "factory production" was still greater—namely 85,707- This term,, however, includes certain industries which are not strictly manufac% taring industries. Kxpcrienco in the older countries ol tiie world has shown that with the growth of population there is a tendency for an increasingly greater proportion of the people to become absorbed in manufacturing- industries. That being so. it is absolutely in-l-ucrative that the manufacturing indus- ; nies of the dominion should obtain the earnest support and goodwill of the community. That such a policy is essential is particularly evident at the present time, when many thousands of our population are out of work. The observance by every man and woman in the dominion of a definite policy of buying New Zealand-made goods whenever possible will largely prevent further increases to the already large number of unemployed, and will enable many of those new out of work to find profitable employment.
