Killing Deer
A DIG TOLL. (••Star correspondent). Wellington, April 12. The operations of the deer killing parties of the Government in the .South Island are being systematically carried out. A further heavy toll of the animals was made last mouth, some G 46 of them being killed in the Hunter Valley.
Reporting- to the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. P. A. de la Perrellc). Mr G. E. Ycrrex, of the staff of the Department of Internal Affairs, who is in charge of the parties operating, states that one party of an average strength of five men operating at the head of the Hunter Valley killed a total of 646 deer. Very bad weather was experienced, and tTiis resulted in loss of time, but at such a locality, in the main divide, a great deal of. rain and snow can always bcl expected. As indicating the importance of good weather on the operations in such a locality, during the period from March 20 to 2y this party killed 500 deer. In one drive 245 deer were killed. On another occasion three men conducted a small drive and shot seventy deer, »rtnd another drive accounted for 133. During the month a party was .moved from the Morvcn Hills to the valley of the Dobson River, above the head of Lake Ohau. The tallies of this party and the parties on Stewart Island and the Higliburn Valley are not yet available. The party which commenced operations at the head of the Rakaia River on March 14 last), jwith an average strength of three men, secured 136 deer and one chamois.
