Immigration and the Land Policy.
The Post’s Criticism
The Premier has promised an immigration policy, but the Times and the Post ask whether the Government will attend to the preliminary need of radical measures for the closer settlement of the land. In an editorial on Mr Massey’s declaration that the country should be gaining at least 25.000 people each year by immigration, the Post says : —“ We have no faith that the Government’s present land policy will help much. Ostensibly the Government bas manufactured some dynamite for the purpose of “ busting ” some of its supporters’ estates (among others), but the explosive promises to be as harmless as some of tho Turkish ammunition, the wooden bullet ammunition intended for “ manoeuvres.” It is mere “ politics ”to treat immigration to stupid isolation from other questions ; it is statemanship to make immigration part of a great national policy.
