LONDON.
THE GIANT. London is nothing more than an administrative expression. It is not a social entity like Paris, or Vienna, or Berlin. There are Berliners and Viennese, just ns.there are Parisians. But there are no Londoners. Before belonging to London a man belongs to his particular borough. You hear the Parisian talk oi Paris with affectionate familiarity as a body of which he is a member. The Londoner has no such sentirpcnt for London. He cannot embrace the giant ; he cannot even think of it. The Metropolis is not “his” town ; it is too wide and scattered and lacking in unity. Paris covers forty square miles, and a horsed vehicle will take you from one end to the other in an hour. London covers 160 square miles, and to go from one side to the other side yon must journey twenty miles.—“ Mail.”
