Banquet at Clyde.

Close on 2o gentlemen attended a banquet at Clyde on Wednesday evening last given by members of the Vincent County Council to those retiring councillors—Crs Horn, Kane and Smart —in recognition of their services to the county and ratepayers. J Deluded in the gathering were several old associates of the councillors, chief among whom was Mr Win. Parcel I, of Bannock* burn, tt ho for a number of years represented Carrick riding on the council. The chair was occupied by Mr Weaver, (chairman Vincent County Council), whilst Mr S. T. Spain filled the vicechair. A lengthy toast list was gone through, the principal one being " The Retiring Chairman," In proposing (his toast Mr Weaver paid a very high tribute to Mr Morn for the very able way in which he had control led the affairs of the council, and after elaborating on his administrative abilities proceeded to refer to his influential connection with the county. lie dealt fully with this question, pointing out the time given by Mr Horn to furthering the interests and developing the resources of the district. He considered Mr Horn was the ablest chairman whoever graced the council chamber, and in concluding regretted that the people of Northern Wakatipu had not taken the opportunity when it presented iiself of recognising the good work and vast labors given ungrudgingly by Mr Horn in

years past, when he sought their support at the recent political elections. Upper Clutha would yet have cause to regret its mistake. Mr Weaver also paid a high compliment to ex-councillor Kane, stating that he would liked to have seen Cr Kane remain in oflice for another term so that he could have filled the high position of chairman. After "21 years connection with the council he was justly entitled to hold that oHlce. The chairman expressed the hope that the retiring councillors would bear fond recollections of their associations with Vincent County. Mr Horn suitably replied, traversing his term of l'.\ years in the council, and referring in kind worth to several old associates.

Tlic toast of this retiring councillors was proposed by Mr J. Ritchie jimr, who piil the ratepayers of Vincent County owed a deep debt of gratitude to those councillors. Messrs. Kane and .Smart replied, and returned thanks for tlio honor conferred upon (hem that evening. Mr Kane said lie had conic specially to do honor to Mr Horn, ami his remarks were to the point and highly appreciated, those in regard lo the ex - chairman's candidature for the Wakatipu seat being popularly received. The function was a great, success and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. A public social was also held in the town hall, where a large crowd attended. It may be mentioned that every councillor spoke in the highest praise of the clerical work of Mr Dickie, who was termed by Mr Horn as "a good schoolmaster."
