Cromwell Fire Brigade

A geueral meeting of the brigade was held in the Council Chambers on Monday even ing Present: Capt. J. Wrightson (in the cbairj, Lieut. J. Varcoe, App. Officer, Delaney, Firemen Toms, Tidey, M'Lay Varcoe, W. Philip, and C. Philip. Lieut. Varcoe tendered his resignation on account of holding the position also of secretary and treasurer.—Held over till next meeting. It was decided to pay the annual fee to the association out of the brigade funds, the amount to be refunded by the council at a later date. It was pointed out that prompt payment of the fee was necessary to ensure being represented by a delegate at the annual conference. Mrs C. J. Scott (president), Mrs W. Ritchie (secretary), and Mrs C Brent (treasurer) representing the Fire Brigade j-azaar Ladies Guild, attended the meeting and handed over the sum of £ll4, proceeds of the recent bazaar. Mrs Scott explained that three small accounts had yftt to be paid. Capt. Wrightson, on behalf of the members of the brigade, thanked the guild for the manner in which tbey bad worked towards raising funds for the brigade. He was sure the members were very thankful for the handsome sum, which would enable the brigade to carry on much better than in the past. Considering the counter-attraction on the iirst night of the races, the speaker considered the sum raised was beyoud expectations, and the residents of the town could rest assured that the biigade would do its utmost in the duty it bad undertaken. Lieut. Varcoe, and Firemen Philip and Toms also expressed the brigades appreciaWon. , . , ~ . ~ At the request of the brigade, the ladies agreed to endorse the receipt for the money with a condition that it should first be devoted towards providing unifoims, com petition gear, etc. The ladies also expressed their willingness to assist at any time with a social toward the brigade funds. It was decided to publicly thank the ladies for organising the bazaar. Jj'ireman C. Philip was appointed delegate to the annual conference at Eotorua in March. A revised set of rules was read, discussed, and adopted. One member was struck oil the roll for non attendance. . In regard to the recent fire Capt. Wrightson comilimented the members on the prompt manner in which they turned out, but regretted they were unfortunate in not striking the plug. Some members may have been aware of a plug being placed at the end of tbe extension but did not know the other had been removed. He thought it would be necessary to have some under standing with tbe council in regard to shifting plugs. The matter was discussed and it was finally resolved.—That the secretary write to the council suggesting that a distinguishing mark be placed at every plug, and that the brigade be notified of any alterations ; also, that all plugs which are at present too low be raised. Fireman Toms was elected to the olhce of foreman. Messrs A. Wilson, G, Norman, and hj. Vickerraan were duly proposed as members of tbe brigade. It was agreed to leave the question of uniforms stand over till a future meeting. Captain Wrightson spoke in regard to practices and suggested holding wet practices every week for the remainder of the summer months. The members readily agreed to the suggestion, Tbe meeting closed with the customary vote to the chair.
