Cromwell Argus, AND NORTHERN GOLDFIELDS GAZETTE Cromwell, Monday, Jan. 29, 1912

Both the local schools re-open on Monday next, The balance of the engineer's general report and report on contracts, submitted at last meeting of the Vincent County Council, appears on page b\ Members of the committee of the Upper Clutha Valley Collie Dog Club are again reminded of the meeting to be held at Luggate on Saturday evening next. Special attention of Upper Clutha residents is directed to the sale of household furniture etc., at Pembroke on Saturday, February 10th, on account of: Miss Murdoch, who is leaving the district. An " Estey " Organ is included in the numerous items. Messrs Cotter Bros, of Arowtown, arc the auctioneers, and invite other entries. A very painful accident happened a few days ago to a young man named Sidney Waide, who is well-kuown in this district. He was shearing at the head of Lake Wakatipu, when the sheep he was handling kicked out, and the shears were driven through Waide's leg with the result that he has since been laid up in the Arrowtown Hospital, and while he is on the mend, it will be some days before he can go about his usual work. The wandering stock nuisance is more rampant than ever in the hick streets, and although mention has been made of the matter at several council meetings, nothing has so far been done to put an end to the trouble. Draught horses and cattle wander the streets at freedom, destroying hedges and breaking fences in quest of young grass. Prosecutions cm be instituted under several different headings but the time is overdue for exercising the by-law relating thereto. One complainant on Saturday threatened to take other steps to abate the nuisance but we hone the authorities will act at once and insist in the streets being kept clear of wandering stock from now on. A conviction in the court would have a salutary effect. Local residents were inclined to resent the programme arranged by the committees in the Upper Clutha Valley, appearing in our last issue, for the tour of Duuedin citizens through , Central Otago, as little or no time was to be spent in Cromwell where irrigation is now a burning question. But apart from arriving in Cromwell on Monday evening and attending a function at night, there is every indication thet the visitors will spend no tune in the district as a communication received from Mr Moritzsoii last week stated that " Mr Bradley's young orchard could he visited provided it was on the road to ■VI r Mackenzie's as the party did not wish to delay after an early start from Cromwell on Tuesday morning.' 1 It may therefore hj< j assumed thai (he party will see nothing of the area proposed to be served by the Meg Irrigation scheme, in support of which the visit was being looked forward to in Cromwell. The local tire brigade is progressing in a manner which should give satisfaction to all concerned, and inspired by the handsome donation from the recent bazaar, is likely to make rapid strides in the future. The efforts of the ladies, who are deserving of all thanks, resulted in a net profit of £IOO and the brigade will thus be enabled to purchase uniforms etc, as well as a competition reel, and should in a year or two be found holding its own with other brigades in the Dominion. There is every assurance that the members are enthusiastic in their work as they have adopted a system of training which spells efficiency. The visit of a representative to the annual conference at Hotoru'a should be attended vvifeh good results, ■

The Cromwell Borough Council notifies that the ten per cent penalty will be added to all rates remaining unpaid after February 28th. The Dunstau District Horticultural Society announces the date of the annual show, and the persons in the various localities from whom schedules and entry forms may be obtained. The period of stagnation into which our town has merged was felt by quite a number of commercials on their usual visit last week, and several confessed to scarcely receiving an order. One wellknown figure summed the position up as the worst; he had ever experienced in Cromwell.

Mr Goodwin, orchard inspector for Otago, was on a short visit to the district last week and inspected a number of orchards. x\.s his Lime was limited he was unable to mike a complete tour, but intends to return again at au early date.

Particulars of several small grazing runs to be offered for selection on 2(ith February, appear in our advertising columns. The ballot will be held in the Atheiueiun Hall, Cromwell, on Tuesday, February 27th. Included in ballot are three runs in the Wauaka district.

A special meeting of the Cromwell Borough Council was held on Thursday evening to lix the weekly half-holiday and Wednesday was again adhered to. The clerk was also instructed to state, when notifying the Minister, that the council favored a universal Saturday half-holiday throughout the Dominion. Special attention is directed to the Vincent County notice re traffic over the Cromwell bridge while being redecked Tt is expected tnat work will be commenced on Wednesday, and that it will cceupy at least a month. The hours the bridge will be open for all traffic is from eight to ten in the morning and from four to live in the afternoon. Millar Bros have for sale a 2:} ft Oil Launch, at present on the Clutha river, a 12h.p. oil engine, crab winches, wire ropes, and other gear used in salvage work at Shine 11. The oil engine should prove very suitable for faun work. All the material is for sale cheap and is worthy of inquiry. Ou Thursday evening a meeting was held in the Council Chambers to consider forming a Defence Kille Club in Cromwell. Mr D. A. Cahill was voted to the chair, and after a short discussion it was resolved to form a club and a. committee was appointed to carry out the details. Another meeting will bo held at an early date, when the regulation form will be signed and forwarded to headquarters.
