Sunday Coif in Canterbury. ■» The Waimairi County Council last week again brielly discussed the ethics of Sunday golf. At a previous meeting it was resolved to ask the Christchurch Golf Club to discontinue playing golf at the Shirley links on Sunday. In reply to this a letter was received from the Christchurch Golf Club acknowledging receipt of the Council’s resolution. Cr W. J. Walter, who originally brought up the subject, suggested that that the club bo asked to reconsider its decision. The chairman There is nothing about a decision in the letter. Cr Walter : --I would like the Council to consult qur legal advisor on the matter. lam going to see it through now we have started. A letter was received from the Rev. W. C. Oliver on behalf of the Shirley Methodist congregation forwarding a resolution passed at the conclusion of a Sunday evening service. Mr Oliver stated that residents who lived in the neighborhood of the the links were loud in their complaints against Sunday playing. It was a real nuisance and the residents would be thankful if it were stopped. The resolution passed was as follows : “ That this congregation protests against the constant playing of golf on Sundays, and sincerely hopes that steps will be taken to put a stop to the same. The chairman (Mr Staples) questioned whether the council was wise in interfering in this matter. He did not think they could do much with it. Cr Cleland said that the Council had power to interfere. The chairman : We may he within our rights, but I think it is not much of a nuisance to anyone. Cr Spencer; What does the law say ? The chairman :—The law does not prevent you playing on Sunday; it stops you working. Cr Cleland: Take your legal ad-< riser’s opinion about it. The chairman : You would be only throwing good money after bad. Cr Cleland : Chance it. It was resolved : “ That a legal opinion be taken as to the Council’s position in regard to abating the nuisance.” Always bear in mind that, however severe your cold may be, TUSSICUKA will cure it.
