MILTON NOTES.

(Bruce Herald.)

Tbe Bruce Poul'ry Society will lmve a small crrdit balance after all expenses 0! the late show have been p.iid. The rough night on the occasion of the show militated against the attendance, and the door receipts fell very much. The afternoon takings were better than formerly. The silver wedding of Mr and MrsWm. Tweedie, of Longridge, Moneymore, was celebrated on Saturday. There was only a small family party ; Mrs Fleming (a daughter) from Oamaru, Miss Tweedie, and Mr Leslie Tweedie were the mem bers of the family present. Hearty congratulations were passed to Mr and Mrs Tweedie on the attainment of the 25ih anniversary of their wedding day. The family wore afterwards callers at the Op timus Studio, where a very nice family group was taken, which will always be a memento ot the happy day. The railway employes of Milton and adjacent stations have arranged to hold their first annual social in tho Coronaton Hall on Friday, 24th August. A B rung working committee have the matter in hand, with Mr N. J. Ward as secrotary. The very distinct success with which the Balclutha railway employes have run their annual social gives Milton very distinct hope and encouragement; at any rate, tbe promoters don't mean to be bahind other oentres, and we venture to think that when the evening of the 24th come round the eocial and dance will be all that is enjoyable. Athletes and enthusiasts will be interested to learn of the progress made by the New Zealand Athletic Union since its formation just seven months ago. At the prelim 5 sary meeting some thirty-five societies were represented, and tho Union has increased its numbers by leaps and bounds, bo that it now has over 200 soci-

eties and athletic clubs under its jurisdiction. Besides all the leading societies in the North Island the following, the most important of this ißland, are also affiliated to their respective centres Otagn, Invercargill. Timaru, and Oamaru Calodonian Societies, Irish Athletic, (Invercargill), Oamaru Hibernian, Wmmate Caledonian, Ashburton St. Patrick, and a host of minor societies and clubs. The Otago Athletic Association, the local oentre of the union, has close on 30 societies either joined, or intent on doing so at their earliest opportunity. When it is remembered that the Exhibition championships are to be held under the auspices of the union, the various clubs and societies in Otago will do well to join immediately, if they have not already done so, as only registered competitors will be allowed to compete at the Exhibition sports, or at meetings under the' anion's jurisdiction. A general meeting

of dalegates to the Otago'Ail.'eiic Associ lion will beheld in theProvn ein 1 Hotel Dunedin, on Friday, August 10 )i, at 8 p.m. Mr D. J- Corcormi is teorciary of the Association.
