CHASLANDS.

(From Otjr Ovm Correspondent ) There is not rauoh to write about in this dull part, and a continuation of extremely bad weather makes U still duller. The annual school picnic was held on the school'grounds on Dec 30th, the day being bitterly cold and showery. The affair was tame although the committee did everything possible to make it a success. A dance was held in the hall at night, and, as usual, was well attended, and everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves. The singing of Messrs Little and M'Kenna-was in itself a treat. The settlers are busy just dow cutting down the noxious weeds, which are very bad throughout the buah settlements. There is a flour famine in this district at present. There is a good opening at Tautuku for a man with a knowledge of storekeeping—one who would take butter, egg 3, and hides, etc., when obtainable, and supply the settlers in Chaslands and Tahakopa Valley with stores, etc. The few young fellows that journeyed to the Clutha, Owaka and Tahakopa sports distinguished themselves very creditably considering that they had no training. Mr John Fraser, of Tautuku, expects to launch his new craft in a few days, and Mr Clark has his mill in full swing cutting first cargo. We are all anxious to see the new boat cross the bar successfully; meantimp, may success attend Messrs Fraser, Clark and Co. in their plucky venture.
