The Commercial Hotel, Woodvill*, was burned down at; midnight, on Friday night. Some of the furniture and stock were saved. In letting off two young volnnteers with a fine of 6s each for pulling the palings off a fence, Mr Poynton, S.M., i at Invercargil], pointed out that instead of their uniform giving them extra freedom it was a rpason why tho3e who wore it should behave themselves, and set an example to other?. Among the passengers by the Aorangi arrived at Wellington were a number of miners returned from Klon dyke. Only one of the men had been in any way successful. The others were glad to have the opportunity of working thf»ir passagos. They rpport that all the payable claims have been t ken up.
