FOOTBALL NOTES.
(By Eed-and-White.) KAITANGATA V. MILTON, A football match was played between the above first fifteens at Kaitangata on Saturday last. The weather being fine a goodly number of spectators turned out, a number for the express purpose of seeing how Kaitangata would shape in their first match. Dr Thomson captained the home team and W. M'Donald the Milton boys. The following were the, respective teams : — " Kaitangata. — Full back, J. Fraser ; threequarters, Dr Thomson, M. Carson, Padget ; halves, Lawrence, J. Tarr ; forwards, J. Duncan. J. Gordon, W. Jarvie, J. M'Millan, W. Taylor, J. Taylor, J. Burns, A. Thomson, E. Hawker. Milton. — Full back, J. M'Donald; threequarters, W. M'Donald, C. Grant, J. Lane ; halves, W. Turner, T. Grant ; forwards, J. C. M'Donald, G. M'Donald, W. M'Lachlan, A. Dickson, H. Moyes, E. Tansley, J. Burn, A. Bryce, F. Grant. Almost immediately after the start C. Grant secured the leather from W. M'Donald, and with great precision sent it over the bar, thus securing a potted goal (4 points) for Milton. Play for a time centred in Kaitangata territory, relieved now and then by the forwards. From a long kick over the line M'Lachlan secured before the ''full back, which, though he failed to register a goal, placed another 2 points to Milton's credit. Slowly Kaitangata worked down field, and a brilliant piece of piay saw Dr Thomson score near the corner. From the difficult angle he, however, failed to convert, After half-time spell play was rather uninteresting, tries being secured for Milton by J. C. M'Donald, W. Turner, and W. M'Donald. M'Lachlan failed in placing the goals, and when time was called the scores were — Milton 12, Kaitangata ! 2. Mr Geo, Wyber acted efficiently as referee, and Dr Fitzgerald . and Mr F. Bastings had charge of the touch lines. Of the play very little may be said. Kaitangata fought a game battle and an uphill one against such a well-combined team as the Milton one. Next time they meet, however, I feel sure it will not be by any means so one-sided, for Dr Thomson had under him on Saturday the makings of a very good team. Indeed, I may say that had it not been for the old " Association " style of play on the part of some of the team the victory would not have been such an easy one. Dr Thomson, of course, was a host in himself, and his display of scientific football was. worth going
far to see. Tarr, as half back, passed very well, and Paget was iv his place at threequarter, although he needs much more practice. Duncan and Hawker were the pick of the forwards for loose work, but Gordon did some very hard work in the scrums. The Toko, players of last year's team are so well known that I need only say that they one and all showed quite up to their last year's form. W. Turner is ajdecided acquisition,
