WAIPAHI

Harvest will be general in this district lin a week or 10 days. Owing to the storm on Monday this will prove more tedious and expensive than usual, much of the. crops being laid (an unusual circumstance), and more have got a list which will make cutting round difficult. The o;it crop is above the average, indeed on the whole the heaviest ever seen in the locality. Those who cultivate large areas of turnips have in particular magnificent crops, difficult to beat anywhere. Messrs Tolmie, Clarke, Taylor, and Bagrie have paddocks which are particularly good. The area undnr crop is considerably less than last year, but with a favourable harvest the yield will aggregate as much. The turnip crop is somewhat irregular. Some very good ; some somewhat patchy, owing to the fly and white grub, and also I fancy to the unequal quality of the artificial manure used. Thinning on some farms is not quite finished, labour for. this work being difficult to get. Boys were getting 15s a-week. Taking into account the cost of manure, the immense amount n( labour in tilling the ground, and the cost of thinning, there must be a considerably larger margin between store and fat sheep than there has been for some years pnsfc to make turnip-growing in drills pay, except to farmers with large families who can do the work without employing hands. There is very little wheat grown in the district, an acre or two here and there. It looks well, and the owners regret that, at present prices, they have not sown more. Grass was somewhat uneven, some very good, some indifferent. Potatoes look very well, but only enough is grown for home use.
