WARKPA AND KAIHIKU.

The crops in these two districts promise a very good return this season, particularly those grown on turnip lands, and this appears to have the predominance. It is very noticeable, however, that crop grown on stubble land is almost without exception very light, and in one or two instances badly blighted. What the reason is farmers do not seem to know. There is also the appearance of a good deal of smut throughout both districts, but in no case to any serious degree. There are several very good pieces of wheat to be seen, notably that of Messrs Smith, of Rocklands. On this farm also is to be seen a first-class crop of oats on turnip land. The Carterhope Estate is showing up well so far. Excellent crops are grown on all the portions that have been tried, and more particularly on the properties purchased by Mr Wright and Mr Davidson ; while Mr D. Farquhar has an exceptionally fine crop of turnips on the i larger part of his farm. The storm of Sunday and Monday last has had the effect of laying a good deal of of the heavier crops ; but it is hoped the damage will not be serious. The small birds are exceedingly numerous this season, and are doing a great deal of damage. Several spasmodic attempts have been made to poison them, but to no purpose. As the crops advance and the damage done by the birds becomes more apparent, there is to be heard from the farmers all around threatenings low and deep, but whether these will ultimately evolve into any effective measures is yet to be seen. - I
