The Clutha Leader. BA LOLUTHA : FRIDAY, JUNE 27, 1890.

, The Financial Statement, of which .wo give a brief summary, is a very lengthy, elaborate, and able exposition of colonial affairs. A oursory examination leads : to the conviction that it is in many respects ! the most satisfactory statement of the | kind ever made by any treasurer of the Colony. E yen apart from the explanation

of th« public accounts for the year, the tnany and varied facts given as to the | present condition, progress arid prospects ■oi the Colony, cannot fail to inspire hope •and confidence both here and in the Home Country, and much good may be expected us the result. The statement is undoubtedly Sir H. A. Atkinson's crowning effort, and friends and opponents alike will be roady to admit the marked ability «tnd true statesmanship that effort displays. : - . . , ♦— AN advertisement in this issue affords full proof of the heartiness and unanimity with which the public have supported the «arly closing movement here. They have all, men and women, voluntarily signed - their -names to a definite pledge in connection with the matter, and no one can ■doubt that this pledge will be faithfully adhered to. The change in the hours of •closing will commence on Tuesday first. .We hope the next change will be a still further curtailment of the hours of weary waiting, especially on Saturday nights. In the meantime both employers and employes, and also the general public, are to be congratulated on the \thorough success that has attended this effort to bring about a much-needed reform.
