* [ FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The weathor for the past few days has been exceedingly frosty. Although the clays are bright and sunny for .a few hours, in the shado the cold is very intense. This morning at 11 o'clock I found the ink perfectly solid, and 1 had to place the inkstand by the firo before I could use it. The Tuapeka hospital accommodation has been taxed very much lately,. and the surgeon had to refuse admission to several. Three old men loffc this morning for the Benevolent Institution, leaving 2fT patients in the hospital, and this number is likely to be maintained for the rest of tho winter.
At a meeting of the borough council held last night tho mayor, Mr J.: C. Arbuckle, intimated to the members that he intended visiting Victoria after an absence of over a quarter of a century, and, as he would bo away several weeks, requested leave of absence. This was granted, councillors expressing a hope he would have a pleasant time, and Mr M. Fraer was appointed acting-mayor until his return. Mr J. 0. Brown, M.H.R. for Tuapoka, addressed a very large meeting of the electors on Monday evening in the Town Hall, and received a vote of confidence after his speech. He leaves for Wellington at the end of this week. He announced his intention of standing again for Tuapeka. June 24.
