Dunedin, March 31.
A sad accident occurred at Port Chalmers. A man named George Smith, employed by Mr George Proudfoot, while engaged cutting an embankment, the face fell in, burying him amongst the debris. When extracted, it was found that life was extinct. His body was dreadfully mangled — the bowels protruding, and one leg completely torn off. Wellington, March 81.
The ' Post ' states that Judge Prendergast will be sworn in to-morrow as Chief Justice, He will immediately thereafter proceed to Dunedin to attend the Supreme Court sittings, Dr, Johnston, Provincial Surgeon, and Drs. Diver, France, and Harding have addressed a protest to the Regis-trar-General against his registering as a medical practitioner a person claiming under a diploma as a doctor of medicine of Philadelphia, as they say such degrees can be obtained for money without examination or a regular course of study. The Rev E, H. Grainger, who is to be removed to Waikouaiti, Otago, was yesterday, presented with a valuable writing desk by the children he has gathered to the Sunday-school during the short time he has, officiated here. A strong feeling of 'attachment has sprung up towards him amongst those who knew him.

The theatrical costume cricket match, yesterday, was very successful. The aresses were good, and the play very amusing. The annual Rifle Association's meeting yesterday passed off successfully. The principal prize, a LSO challenge Cup, seven shots, a<HfeO9r6OO r «nd"'0OO yards, was won by Sergt. Beattie, of the Engineers, with 63 points.
