Pacific spat
A Nelson-based company, Kiwi Farms, says it has the go-ahead to establish an experimental Pacific oyster spat-catching facility in Marlborough Sounds. The Marlborough Harbour Board last week approved the project for Croisilles Harbour as part of an investigation into the viability of Pacific oyster farming in the Sounds. Kiwi Farms will use special bundles of various materials to find out which is best for attracting oyster spat during its mobile stage in the summer months. The Pacific oyster is a relative newcomer in New Zealand waters.
