Snedden’s side wins

PA Auckland An invitation side led by Martin Snedden beat an Auckland XI in a limited over cricket match played in carnivallike atmosphere at Eden Park on Sunday.

Snedden, in the benefit game, captained “The team of the 80s” which included former internationals Mark Burgess, Jock Edwards and Lance Cairns and members of the current international team.

At the start of each innings, proceedings were reasonably serious. As the

innings progressed, 'however, runs were given away with some generous bowling performances.

Auckland totalled 231-9, Trevor Franklin scoring 50 and Steve Brown 69. Franklin, after an awkward start against Ewen Chatfield, hit eight fours and a six. Brown looked impressive in hitting nine fours and three sixes. Danny Morrison and Willie Watson bowled tightly to make life awkward for John Wright and Andrew Jones, who opened the innings for the invitation side. '
