Appointed members
Sir,—The decision of the Minister of Health to appoint up to five members to the new Canterbury Area Health Board represents a further serious threat to our democracy. The entire board should be elected by and accountable to, the people of Canterbury. The appointees will only be answerable to the Minister and, presumably, will act on her instructions. The board should have sound business advice and this should be provided by the board’s staff. By placing her appointees on the board she will assure her directions will have support and that complaints from the board of possible future reductions in funding will be muted. One may ask what prior business experience has the Minister had; Do we expect that candidates for Parliament should have had business experience? If we accept this dictatorial intrusion without demur we may find that the Government may proceed to appointing a commissioner. — Yours, etc., K. ORR. October 23, 1989. '
