Starship fuelled for top run again

Starship, so impressive when staging his debut from John Reedy’s Westport team in last month’s Flying Stakes at Ashburton, is hard to go past in the $30,000 Lion Red Hannon Memorial at the Oamaru Harness Racing Club’s meeting today. Whatever the outcome today, it is still uncertain whether Starship will be cleared to run in next month’s $400,000 D.B. Draught New Zealand Cup at Addington Raceway. The Lordship entire is the subject of legal action over a training dispute and former trainer Bill McDonald is seeking an injunction to prevent the horse racing until the case is heard. The original application for an injunction was adjourned until after today, enabling Starship to start at Oamaru, but unfortunately for harness racing, the case may linger through next month’s big carnival. Starship, which has had three weeks to freshen since his New Zealandrecord run for 2400 m mobile of 2:56 at Ashburton, is drawn to be handy throughout again today. As a rule, he has been a smart beginner from standing starts in the past. Debbie’s Boy, the runner-up to Starship after pacemaking at Ashburton, blew markedly after wilting to fourth at Forbury Park nine days ago. That outing should have him firing on all cylinders again for this and he, too, is likely to be in or about the leading line for much of the running. Gina Rosa returned to form with an effortless 2600 m all-the-way win at Addington on Friday in a moderate 3:24.4, sprinting in from the 800 m in 58.1, and from the ace barrier today, should also be in the firing line throughout. Laser Lad was an improver’s second at Forbury and is hard to leave out, while Frangelico is racing solidly, as is Final Offer. A better prospect could be Inky Lord, which flew over his last 800 m in 55.5 for fourth at Addington on Friday, but has again drawn wide here. Last season’s Great Northern Derby winner is too good to dismiss, even though the Oamaru track does not entirely suit back runners because of its “flat” corners. Michele Bromac was put on the unruly mark by the stipendiary stewards for standing starts after breaking at Addington on Friday, but appears as an upset chance if she steps away smartly. She went soundly on Friday after her early mishap and impressed at the trials last Monday.

Joy’s Girl, a 1:59.3 miler of last season and a stablemate of Gina Rosa in Jack Smolenski’s Weedons team, could be ready to return to the winners’ list in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Taits Transport Mobile Pace, after an improver’s fifth on the first day.
