Steinlager 2 doubts
Lawrie Smith, skipper of the British maxi Rothmans, has voiced doubts about whether Steinlager 2 was competing with the correct rating in the Whitbread Round the World yacht race. Asked by a British newspaper journalist whether he thought the rating of Peter Blake’s maxi was right, Smith replied: “How can I be sure if I haven’t seen the boat out of water?” Smith was looking back on the 6300 mile first leg from Southampton to Uruguay which was won by Steinlager 2 with Rothmans coming in fourth.
