Bushcraft course helps beginners
Those wanting to go on week-end tramps, but needing some practical know-how, will find the Canterbury Mountain Safety Committee’s Introductory Bushcraft course helpful. This will be on the week-end of November 18
and November 19, in the Nina Valley, Lewis Pass. Participants will learn about gear, food, camp sites, hygiene, fire lighting, map reading, route finding, river crossing, and first aid. The fee is $3O, which excludes food and transport. Numbers are limited to 35 and registrations close on November 3. Caring for an elderly person and having an-
other job too can be very stressful. A workshop for employed people who are also carers will be held on Saturday, November 4 at the Presbyterian Support Services seminar room at 236 Hereford Street.
This will be an opportunity to look at the dilemmas of employed carers, to inform carers
of the ageing process and to offer support. The workshop, which runs from 10 a.m. until 3.30 p.m. costs $lO, which includes a light lunch. Numbers are limited to 20. ADARDS Ways of helping carers with behaviour associated with dementia is the topic of the public education meeting of the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Society this Thursday, October 26/ The speakers are Sally McPherson and Julie Shepherd, who have wide experience of caring for those with dementia. Questions will be welcome at this meeting, which runs from 1.30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Disabled Persons Centre, 314 Worcester Street. For more information phone ADARDS at 792590. After separation A workshop to explore and celebrate new beginnings after separation starts at Marriage Guidance on Tuesday, November 14. This will be particularly useful for those who have already completed some grief work, such as separation counselling.
The four-week course, in the evenings, will help participants to like and look after themselves, to explore the new choices in their lives and to feel

Barbara Morgan, a naturopath, will talk about naturopathy in the treatment of pain at an open meeting of Pain Action in New Zealand this Wednesday, October 25. This will be in room 114 of the Cranmer Centre at 7.30 p.m. A door charge of $1 will be made to non-members. On Thursday, October 26, P.A.I.N.Z. is holding a stall in Cathedral Square. Anyone with items to donate can leave them at the Cranmer Centre the night before, or bring them to the stall on the day. Otherwise phone the P.A.I.N.Z. centre at 660716 and they can be picked up. Any offers to help out at the stall would be appreciated. Wardrobe planning With clothes the prices they are, it’s easy to make expensive mistakes. Wardrobe planning can make the difference between dressing disaster and well co-ordinated clothes that offer lots of possibilities for different occasions. Shary Vargo and Carmel Bacon, colour consultants, are offering a wardrobe planning evening next Wednesday, November 1. This will be at the
Bishopdale Community Centre, from 7 p.m. until 9.30 p.m. The seminar will cover the basic survival wardrobe, colour confidence, 15 ways to tie scarves and how to avoid impulse buying. Homeless youth Brother Bernard is in the front line providing help for disadvantaged and homeless young people in Christchurch. He will speak on these young people, some of them just children, at an open meeting this Thursday, October 26. This will be at the Crippled Children’s Society buildings, 27 Kilmarnock Street, Riccarton, at 7.45 p.m. All interested welcome. The talk will be preceded by the annual general meeting of the Disturbed Children’s Aid Movement. Hepatitis B Hepatitis B vaccinations are being offered to older children, students and adults in the Lincoln area this Saturday, October 28. This will be at the Lincoln Community Centre, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Follow-up shots will be given over the next few months. The cost is $lO per dose for the under-1 Is, and $l5 per dose for those older. The campaign has been organised by the Lincoln and Districts Community

Weight loss Sue Taylor is taking names for her next series of weight loss courses, using a many-sided approach that can be adapted to meet individual needs.
