Employment Service
Sir, — I am still trying to get a satisfactory answer why the “user-pays” system does not apply to the New Zealand Employment Service. Assisting the unskilled and semi-skilled to find jobs is one thing, but the reply from R. E. Wills, operations and marketing director, gives no explanation why it continues to provide a free service to prosperous employers who hire skilled workers. Right now the Government is forcing hospitals to close, but it can find S4OM to open 70 offices all over the country for the expanded N.Z.E.S. Would it be naughty of me to wonder if the whole set-up is mainly a gigantic propaganda exercise to show what wonderful things the Government is doing about unemployment? It is not the first time it has used taxpayers’ funds to brainwash the public. Remember “Mrs Mopp” and “Rub out the Crim”? — Yours, etc., S. G. FITCHETT. October 4, 1989.
