Appeal does well A street appeal in August for the combined Christchurch women’s refuges raised $9490.07. The money will go towards the cost of running the three emergency houses. Genealogy seminar A one-day seminar for genealogists and familyhistory tracers will be held at Heaton Street School on Saturday, October 14. Conducted by the Canterbury Group of the Society of Genealogists, subjects will include getting started, New Zealand and overseas research and how computers can be of use to genealogists. Dr Peter Tremewan from the University of Canterbury will talk on the early French settlement of Banks Peninsula, and Ms Caroline Etherington from the National Archives will talk on the records and access to material held at National Archives. Grant for leukaemia The W. H. Travis Trust gave $26,000 to the Canterbury-Westland division of the Cancer Society in the last financial year for research into leukaemia. Since the trust was established in 1927, more than $394,000 has been distributed in the field of medicine.
