Final chance for Mark Hanover

Auckland correspondent The glamour three-year-old, Mark Hanover, will make a last-ditch attempt to qualify for the $150,000 Liquorland Sires Stakes final at Addington. The colt lost an early chance to make the final when disqualified in the first heat at the Te Awamutu meeting at Cambridge last Friday night. He will now take his chance in the final heat of the series at Addington on November 7, just three days before the 'final. “If he’s not good enough .to qualify on Cup day (November 7), then he wouldn’t be a show in the final,” trainer and partowner Roy Purdon said yesterday. Mark Hanover had to play second fiddle to stablemate The Unicorn last week and the pair return to Cambridge tonight to do battle in the $16,000 D.B. Stakes. Mark Hanover was disqualified for putting Captain Riki out of the race, but he should not interfere with anything from 20 metres tonight. It is unlikely he will be able to turn the tables on The Unicorn, which starts from 10 metres. “If they both step away well, I doubt very much whether Mark Hanover can beat The Unicorn,” Purdon said. “Time has really helped The Unicorn. He’s a nice big horse now and he’s been working pretty well.” The Unicorn proved the fastest two-year-old last season (1:57.8) and should again make it tough for Mark Hanover tonight. Staying is the latter’s forte. The pair will be in Christchurch for the Lion Brown Rising Stars heats next Thursday and the $70,000 final eight

days later.
