Lindsay Clemett Mr Clemett is also standing for the Kaikoura District Council. His interest in rugby football for the last 43 years has been as player, referee, coach, committee member and president. He is a Civil Defence warden, Neighbourhood Watch coordinator and a St John Ambulance driver and committee member. His other interests include bowls, golf, community theatre and school committees.

Having served on the community council for three years he feels he is able to serve the community at a higher level. He wants to see a good standard for roads and streets and a greater promotion of tourism to provide jobs for young people in the district. There should be more promotion of the whale watching, fishing, sight-seeing, horse trekking and four-wheel drive safaris offered in Kaikoura.

Mr Clemett is pleased to see that the Information centre is doing well and will work to ensure that facilities are kept to a high standard to encourage more tourism. His biggest concern is the water supply situation, especially during the holiday period. Jim Gameson Mr Gameson is standing as a candidate for the Nelson-Marlborough Regional Council, Kaikoura District Council and mayoralty of the district council. His local government and community experience includes the Christchurch City Council and Kaikoura County Council. He is an executive member of the South Island Local Bodies Association, member of the North Canterbury Electric Power Board, Department of Justice warden, member of the Marlborough Licensing Committee and a member of the Marlborough Catchment and Regional Water Board. He feels that after 30 years of continuous local body expierence and being retired he has the time and experience to serve the Kaikoura district and its people fully. His priorities are water storage, footpaths, cemetery, rubbish removal, roading, streets and bridges and better street lighting. Richard Latter Mr Latter is married with five daughters. His local body experience covers six years as a Kaikoura County councillor, 23 years on the Kaikoura Pest Destruction Board, 15 years on the Kaikoura Noxious Plants authority and six years on the South Island Pest destruction boards’ Associa-

tion. He has lived in Kaikoura all his life and believes that he has the interests of the area at heart. “My main interest lies in land protection which to me encompasses weeds, pests and soil conservation. There must still be funding from central Government for nassella and the rabbit prone areas, and a fair and equitable form of local funding,” he says.” Don McKenzie Mr McKenzie is a candidate for the NelsonMarlborough regional Council (Kaikoura constituency), the Kaikoura District Council and for the Kaikoura mayoralty. He is a company director. He believes that the new district council will need a steady, experienced hand at the wheel to lead the area into the 1990 s and through the many changes taking place. His experience in local government and 29 years in business could be used to advantage by the district and its people.

“I would like to see a strong rural group and an urban ratepayers’ association which could liaise with the council to discuss ideas and areas of concern. This should also apply to any other groups who may wish to have their points of view known,” Mr McKenzie says. Errol Parker Mr Parker is a candidate for the Nelson-Marl-borough Regional Council (Kaikoura constituency) and the Kaikoura District Council. He is a journalist with wide experience and a company director with qualifications in business management, real estate and rural valuation. He says that the successful Kaikoura candidate on the regional council will need a proven facility with accounting procedures and' a clearly equal interest it) rural and urban affairs. Reporting back to the district council will require journalistic . skills, business management training and familiarity with Town and Country planning matters, in particular. Mr Parker proposes a rate freeze for Kaikoura for a year. A satisfactory town water supply is a must. Ratepayers need assurance that catchment works will be practical, fully costed and effect permanent improvement. Accountability by councils should be extended to a requirement for councils to seek ratepayer opinions and priorities rather than deliver their edicts by fait accompli.
