Auckland eyes koalas for 1990 celebrations

PA Auckland Auckland may get to host three koalas as part of its 1990 celebrations for the city’s 150th anniversary. ( The Deputy Mayor, Mr Phil Warren, instrumental in organising the recent panda visit, is now working on his next project for the Auckland Zoo.

“It has always been a dream of mine to have koalas here,” he said. One of the problems with a koala visit was

providing the right eucalyptus leaves for them to eat. But Mr Warren was confident the koalas could be accommodated for three months. The marsupials, protected in law like New Zealand’s kiwis, would probably come from a Queensland animal sanctuary. Auckland’s sister city, Brisbane, would be approached for the loan of three koalas, said Mr Warren. T{je Auckland City I

Council had asked local body neighbours to plant eucalyptus trees for longterm use, if needed. This had been done but Mr Warren did not expect the trees to be ready for a 1990 visit. The old panda enclosure would be suitable for the koalas, he said. Meanwhile, the zoo is preparing for a pair of North American treedwelling porcupines, a gift from the Commonwealth Games Association of Canada. k r
