Sydenham wing equals record

A little bit of slapstick accompanied Edward Sparrow’s equalling of the Christchurch senior rugby try-scor-ing record at Sydenham Park on Saturday. The Sydenham right wing’s four touch-downs in the match gave him 26 for the season, equalling the mark set by Mark Vincent (Marist) two winters ago. But two of Sparrow’s tries against Albion on Saturday were distinctly “soft.” Wiremu Maunsell could have scored untouched between the posts in the first half, but veered to the right to make contact with Sparrow. In the final quarter Kieran Flynn

outran the Albion defence and then jogged around in the in-goal area, awaiting Sparrow’s arrival from the other side of the field.

The Sydenham right wing scored his team’s first try, and the last as well, after Flynn broke through on the left flank and found support inside from Jason Payne, who gave Sparrow a clear run for the line.

Sparrow is a former Marist player, scoring seven tries for the team last season. Ironically, Vincent, the recordholder, has not scored this season because of consecutive wrist injuries.
