Smoking
Sir,—l was dismayed to read the pro-cigarette smoking propaganda promoted by Michael J. Thompson, executive director of the Tobacco Institute of New Zealand (February 28). I see no direct link with barbecues because, to date, I am not aware that participants are subjected to a build-up of carbon-monoxide during such gatherings. Scant public attention is given to one sinister aspect of tobacco smoking. This practice releases odourless, colourless but poisonous gas on everyone $ close range. For
the enlightenment of the promoters, Admiral Richard Byrd’s autobiography, "Alone,” gives his devastating experience at the South Pole from carbon-monox-ide poisoning because of a faulty burner. They could well take heed. — Yours, etc., LORNA ANKER. March 2, 1989.
