N.Z. Utopian vision shattered?

From TONY VERDON, London Correspondent The controversy over Maori land rights had shattered New Zealand’s once Utopian vision of racial harmony, millions of British television viewers were told last week-end. The racial question was an undercurrent to almost all of the Princess Royal’s engagements in New Zealand

last week, said British newscaster Trevor McDonald. Mr McDonald said the Commonwealth Games in Auckland may not be the major event in New Zealand next year. “The year will see a renewed thrust in the gathering storm about Maori rights, and will focus on much more than Maori rights and culture,” he said.

The year would mark the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, “But Maoris contend it was abused by greedy and devious settlers, while settlers say the Maoris must grow up and stop living in the past,” said Mr McDonald. “It is a row which has shattered New Zealand’s once Utopian vision of racial harmony.”
