Chch crime rate rising

The latest crime figures show a continuing problem with violent crime in Christchurch, says the police district commander, Mr Ron Melrose. Statistics show 200 more offences were reported in 1988, than in 1987. Total offending in Christchurch rose only 0.7 per cent but violent offences increased 12 per cent. Sexual offences rose 25 per cent or about 40 to 50 extra offences for the year.

Last year 174 robberies were reported compared with 151 during 1987. Burglaries and car theft also continued to rise. There were 6997 burglaries in 1988 compared with 6689 in 1987, and 3919 reported car thefts last year compared with 3883 in 1987. Arsons, a continuing problem in Christchurch, rose to 245 last year, compared with 154 the previous year.
